Joining our church
There are a variety of ways to participate as a member at the Chebeague Community Church. All are welcome to join us for worship, Bible study, and to participate in our ministries, regardless of background. Membership is a decision to intentionally make this church your spiritual home.
Membership in a church is primarily about commitment to a community. At the Chebeague Community Church, we believe that everyone belongs, but membership is something different - it is a visible and public statement about being the church together. As a member, your covenant with us is to faithfully engage the work of Jesus Christ through this church by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness.
It takes all of us working together to achieve our mission: “We are called to be an inclusive, diverse and caring Christian community: worshipping, praying, witnessing, reaching out to all people on the Island and beyond, daring to grow and change as God calls us.” Membership is one way to express your commitment to that mission. As we become the Chebeague Community Church, I invite you to prayerfully consider taking that step with us through becoming a member. You can read more about membership in our bylaws (https://bit.ly/3DajppZ).
Any individual 13 and older may become a member in the categories below:
Members and Associate Members, according to our bylaws, have vote at our Membership Meetings.
Those who wish to join as members need to schedule a conversation with Victor Diaz, Chaplain about why they wish to join, how they hope to serve the church, and about what faith formation they've had (and hope to have!) in relationship with this congregation.
We take in members during worship so that the entire community can welcome our new members and so that we can reaffirm and renew our own covenant of membership in the church together.
Baptism is also an important step on the membership journey. If you haven't yet been baptized and are interested in joining the church, please talk to Victor Diaz, Chaplain. With baptism, we understand that God claims us as part of the family and that God is active in our lives, even before we are aware of it. We baptize infants and children, understanding that in this sacrament, it is God who acts. Generally, children who are baptized later go through confirmation classes when approaching the age of 13, and become members upon completion of the course on Sunday morning when the full community is gathered to celebrate and affirm this step on their faith journey.
